Re: Configuring Network Mapping from RS back to PS

Hi,

As a workaround, at your DR site you can create 3 portgroups with same VLAN ID configured.

This will allow you to do appropriate mappings for failback.

ESXi 5.1 Slow Write Speeds

$

Hi Guys,

I am looking for some advice as to how to best troubleshoot this problem I am having as I am currently at a loss as to what it can be. I have just finished building an ESXi 5.1 Lab which comprises of:

  • Supermicro X7DRH-7F motherboard (10GB onbaord)
  • Xeon E5-2620 CPU
  • 64GB RAM
  • 120GB SSD (planning to use as Host Cache but currently a VMFS volume)
  • 16GB Kingston USB Key (ESXi 5 install)
  • Synology DS3612xs with an Intel x520 dual 10GB NIC ( 8 X 4TB disks in RAID6, 1 X Samsung 830Pro) Currently using file level iSCSI LUNS

Prior to installing ESXi 5.1 I was running Server 2012. From within Windows connecting to the Synology over iSCSI I would regularly obtain about 200MB/s write speeds over a single 10GB connection (CAT6 cable directly from the 10Gb port on the motherboard to the 10GB port on the Synology). Having installed ESXi 5.1 my write speeds are terrible – about 10MB/s.. This can also be seen when I attempt to take/remove a snapshot as an example.

Initially I though the issue was to do with the networking so I ran through and double checked that the network card, virtual switch and Synology were all configured correctly with an MTU of 9000 and 10GB full duplex which they were (see screenshots).

Conducting some further testing I thought I would attempt to write some files locally to the SSD drive. Logging in locally to the ESXi server using SSH I wrote a file using dd by changing into the appropriate “/vmfs/volumes/blah” where the SSD and Synology iSCSI mount points are. In each instance when using dd (dd if=/dev/urandom of=./TestFile bs=1M count=10)  the file write speeds were approximately 10MB/s – which leads me to believe this may not be a network issue.

For clarity I have uploaded a couple of pictures to help with diagnoses:

Hardware and ESXi version info: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1428230/ESXi5.1/HardwareInfo.jpg

VM Switch Info (note that the on board NIC is connected directly over CAT6 to the Synology NIC on a different network range to the management and

VM Switch and NIC properties (see MTU of 9000): https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1428230/ESXi5.1/SwitchNICProperties.jpg

Synology NIC Config: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1428230/ESXi5.1/SynologyConfig.jpg

Datastore Info: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1428230/ESXi5.1/Storage.jpg

Here is a link to the dd test files and approximate speeds: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1428230/ESXi5.1/DDTest.jpg

Appreciate any help with diagnosing this issue or running any additional tests to help out.

Is there any way to create a VMvmare server cluster?

Hi,

I have two machines which don't support install ESXi, these machines are running centos 5 with no X and I installed vmware server 2.0.

My question is, is there any way to create a vmware server cluster like is possible create in ESX?

I know in ESX once you create a cluster, the resources are increased since resources are added. Is there any way to do same thing with vmware server 2.0?

Also is there any other option for my machines, I don't want to install X since the machines don't have much resource.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry, but I just don't have the time to give step-by-step directions at the present time.

Bottom line is always work with a copy of the virtual hard disk (or Virtual Machine Package), not the original, and or ensure you have a proper* backup first before doing anything!

Now RTFM!

Have a look at: Managing Virtual Hard Disks& Add an Existing Virtual Hard Disk

For mounting .vmdk's directly under OS X it requires installing the VMDKMounter.app from, say VMware Fusion 3.x, and OS X Fuse. Have a look at: Fusion 4: no VMDKMounter

==========

*  It is a known fact that Time Machine is not 100% reliable backing up/restoring Virtual Machines under all circumstances/conditions.  Also backing up Virtual Machines via Time Machine is disk/time intensive and wastes a tremendous amount of space for something that may be corrupt and worthless come time to restore it.  At a minimum I would exclude Virtual Machines from Time Machine and with the Virtual Machines shutdown, not suspended, and VMware Fusion closed then manually copy the Virtual Machines Package(s) to an alternate location, preferably on to a different physical hard disk.  Then keep the User Data that is stored within the Virtual Machine backed up off of the Virtual Machine on a regular basis so as to always have a current User Data Backup.  If you have to restore a properly backed up Virtual Machine that is not as current at least you'll have a working Virtual Machine and current User Data to go forward with when you find out your Time Machine Backup of the Virtual Machine fails.

First of all, check if the ESX is observing latency and where. Use KB http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1008205 to help on this.

Also, check /var/log/vmkernel.log if you are not receiving any errors. I did not verified, but this Synology is supported under 5.1?

Freeze Vmware Server

Hi guys,

I'm new in this communitie, in fact this is my first thread.

I've installed Vmware Server (at least for now, I don't know which version, because notebook is in the office).

The problem is the following:

Each some time virtual machine freeze, t

neither ctrl+alt+delete works, the only option is restart machine. I noticed that the virtual machine is freeze when I performed scroll down in a document opened with some text editor (notepad / notepadd++).

I thought that the issue was by RAM, but I tried increasing, but the same result (from 2GB to 4GB)

Virtual Machine General Details:

- OS = Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise x64

- 4 GB RAM

- 50 GB HardDisk

My notebook details:

- OS Windows 7 enterprise x64

- I7

- 16 GB RAM

I'm not sure, but seem be that I read that issue occurs by driver problem or something like that.

I really appreciate your response, if you need some extra, please let me know and Monday I'll can attach.

Best regards,

Nico

Hello,

Below is our current ESXi details for 2 environment;

ENV 1:

ESXi Version: 4.1

Number of ESXi: 4 in one Cluster with DRS

CPU: 12 CPUs * Intel Xeon X5650 @ 2.8

Socket: 2

Logical Processors: 24 * 4

RAM: 73 gb per host

Currently total VMs hosted: 90

Reservation: None

ENV2:

ESXi Version: 5.0

Number of ESXi: 3 in one Cluster with DRS

CPU: 12 CPUs * Intel Xeon X5650 @ 2.5

Socket: 2

Cores: 6

HT: Enabled

Logical Processors: 24 * 4

RAM: 98 gb per host

Currently total VMs hosted: 40

Reservation: None

1) How to know what is the maximum numbers of VMs it would be good to host based on above CPU and Memory, as already 90 and 40 vms are hosted.

Appreciate your help.

cannot run repair on XP

hi this has been driving me a bit mad.

i can boot into my vmware image of xp in normal mode fine. however i want to bring up the repair option using the xpSP3 disc to attempt to change to VLK license.

The problem i have is that i never get the repair screen when running the XP CD, it goes straight to the format hardrive option.

I have tried the method where the floppy files are attached and i load the scsi drivers via f6, f2 etc but this does not work.

This is driving me a bit crazy and no one seems to know a way around it.

is there anything im doing wrong or missing?

TimNelms,

This is an interesting discovery, however, the Network order registry key value that you mention was already correct in my freshly built Windows 8 VM using Fusion 5.03...yet I still am expoeriencing the shared folder freeze issue.

I hope this solves the issue for you.

Thanks,

Are you certain? Because doesn't the ESXi install reside there since the ONLY local storage on this server is the RAID5.

I haven't tried this in real life because I have multiple boot drives to work from when running DiskWarrior on the target, but I believe it's possible to create a DW boot DVD that you can boot from and run DW from. I wonder if that DVD were set as the Startup Disk in Fusion preferences for the VM you want to fix, whether you could then run DW on the VM since both should be present in the same virtual environment. But as WoodyZ says, try that on a copy, not the original!

The VMFS partition is just one of multiple partitions on the disk/volume. Running fdisk -lu will show you the partitions. Deleting the datastore and recreating it with another block size is comparable with re-formatting e.g. the D: drive on a Windows host, which doesn't affect the C: drive/partition either.

Take a look at http://rickardnobel.se/esxi-5-0-partitions/ (although for ESXi 5) to see how the partitions look like.

Re: Failover question on stopping SRA sync

Thank you for the reply. I know that using array replication that all VMs in a LUN are protected in a group.

But is it possible to only bring up 1 vm that is on a Lun up to a protected--knowing the sync for the Lun will stop for the others.

For instance:

Lun01 contains vm1,vm2,vm3

It is synced via array to the protected site.

Could I create a Protection group that only contains vm1. And then initiate a Recovery of that protection group. If so, would SRM simply leave vm2, and vm3 alone, break the array sync via SRA, and then bring up vm1 on the protected site? Knowing of course that vm2 and vm3 will no longer be protected?

Delving into SRM, it just seems i will need to really rearrange our Luns,,,,we have some Luns with 10vms, some with 40 even. We have total about 1,000 vms.

I am just trying to see if I am going to be put in a situateion that forever reason we need to do a planned migration or we have some disaster, but we dont want to be forced to bringing over(and potentially losing whatever data our rpo cant catch) ALL vms in an Lun just to get 1 or 2 spun up.

I suppose if we were doing some planned migratoin we could svmotion to a "blank" lun and protect that, and then recover it.

Am I making sense:)

Thanks!

It works (it's faster). I didn't expect that these 2 extra traversals would be so expensive.

Thanks. Ideally, it would be better (more ecological and economical) to run DiskWarrior fron a hard disk, pendrive or similar instead of a read-only device like a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM, so that when a new version of DiskWarrior comes out, you can easily update it without having to discard the previous CD or DVD.

I seem to recall something like this happening to me once.  Find the file itself, make sure you have file extensions set to be visible (if it's windows), and check to see if the file as any sort of suffix added to the end of the vmdk files.  If I remember correctly the way it locked the file was to rename it and add something to the end of the filename like .lock or something.  I removed the extra extension and it booted up after that.
